Awakening (Japanese title Shinjin Mezameru - God and Man Awaken) is the second episode of the series as well as the second part of the Threshold orchestration. It was originally aired on the 28 January 2002 in Japan and 3 September 2005 in the United States.
Sypnosis[]
Awakening the RahXephon, Ayato takes to the battlefield. Its presence attracts the attention of Elvy Hadhiyat and her squadron who attempt to launch an attack, resulting in the destruction of the squadron; with the exception of Elvy herself who manages to evade the RahXephon's beam attack.
Fortissimo follows up and attempts to attack the RahXephon; with the dolem's attack being reflected by the mecha back onto it resulting in the Fortissimo's defeat and the fading of Mu. Following this the RahXephon returns to the Rah Room and Ayato is retrieved and taken to hospital.
The goverment agents review the footage from the fight between Haruka Shitow and the government agents and locate the tracking device within Ayato's belongings.
Waking up in the hospital, Ayato asks if he was found with someone and is advise he was found alone and released from hospital into the care of his mother. Within the hospital's corridors Ayato overhears news of the battle causing him to have flashbacks to the combat.
In the car with Maya Kamina, Ayato asks about the battle and the RahXephon to be told that the RahXephon was not seen by anyone, although the battle itself was witnessed. Returning home, Ayato called Reika Mishima to confirm her safety. Maya observing the call, attempts to redial the number to find it is not in use.
At school, Ayato's mind drifts to the conversation with Haruka regarding the "truth of the world". Outside Haruka is watching from a car. Ayato is asked about the events following his departure from the train by Hiroko Asahina and Mamoru Torigai. He makes reference to meeting Reika, who is not in class, but she appears soon after. At the swimming pool, Ayato confides in Reika about the events and that he believes they happened, although no-one witnessed them.
Opening his locker at home, he finds a photo of the battle with a message to meet at 2am in Shakuji Park. Back at the lab, Masayoshi Kuki and Shinobu Miwa are reviewing the damage of Fortissimo. Ayato and Haruka meet, with Ayato asking about the truth. Haruka asks him how many people there are in the world people he thinks are in the world to respond with 23 million, before confirming 6 billion to him.
Ayato and Haruk then break into a government compound and news reaches the Tokyo government that Ayato has been taken hostage in the TERRA VTOL. At same the time that Fortissimo's repairs are complete Masayoshi and Shinobu receive a warning from the Rah Room; Reika is heading towards the Rah Room, although the two have no visual to see this happening.
Ayato and Haruka attempt to commandeer a craft in an attempt to break out of Tokyo Jupiter; however the controls are overridden remotely, taking them back to the base. Reika starts to sing on the RahXephon, calling to Ayato and awakening the mecha. The craft Ayato and Haruka are in descends towards to Rah Room and orders are issued by Maya that is the RahXephon awakens the dolem must be activated.
Mayayoshi and Shinobu attempt to track the craft, but are unable to, however they believe that it is descending. As the craft Ayato is in descends, he attempts to break free from his seat restraints, however on entering the room Reika calls to him and he uses the emergency eject. The ship crashing into the room's waters, Haruka escapes to see Ayato approaching the RahXephon. Maya is also heading to the room. Falling into the RahXephon Ayato finds himself in the pilot's seat as the mecha awakens. In a state of panic and confusion, Ayato has another flashback to the battle from earlier, recalling the destruction of Elvy's squadron. Lashing out a fragment of a pillar strikes Maya, revealing she has blue blood.
